Sarati Rúmilo

Here is another long term project: a LaTeX2e package for the sarati of Rúmil. At the moment I have only a skeleton for typesetting vertical columns from left to right (it needs eLaTeX, actually). If you have some spare time, a good knowledge of METAFONT and are willing to help, feel free to send me your fonts (please, start the subject with [elvishtc] so that I will be able to filter it and read before other messages).

With the latest issue of Parma Eldalamberon it's finally proved that Tolkien experimented quite a lot with sarati and some stages seem to me incompatible with later developments.

The original goals of this project were, before the publication of Parma Eldalamberon #13, to provide a package to typeset text using every mode Tolkien ever devised, but I will probably step back to a simpler task... I'm still not sure. I have spent some time carefully studying the available documents and at least one thing is clear: in the fictional history sarati were used to write only Q(u)enya (both Valarin and Ñoldorin dialect).

I haven't decided yet about the followings:

• should I develop many fonts or keep all the different characters in a single one?
• how should the different modes be called?
• should I develop every possible mode?

The last option would be to delete the project...
